FLAS Fellowships support undergraduate, graduate and professional students in acquiring modern foreign languages and area or international studies competencies. Students from all departments and professional schools are encouraged to apply. FLAS Fellowships are available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Contingent on funding from the U.S. Department of Education, the eight National Resource Centers of the University of Washington's Jackson School of International Studies will offer Academic Year 2013-14 and Summer 2013 FLAS Fellowships in these languages.
FLAS Fellows receive:
Academic Year Graduate: $18,000 tuition, $15,000 living stipend
Academic Year Undergraduate: $10,000 tuition,$5,000 living stipend
Summer Graduate/Undergraduate: $5,000 tuition,$2500 living stipend
See the links above for more information. Applicants should carefully read all FLAS guidelines, including Center-specific guidelines, before applying. Undergraduate applicants should note that they are ineligible for FLAS Fellowships for beginning level language study and cannot apply to study French, German or Spanish. Graduate students are eligible for all levels of language study. If you have any questions, contact flas@uw.edu.
This section covers fellowships that use the same application system as the FLAS Fellowship. These awards are granted by committees supporting study of (1) East Asia, (2) Russia, East Europe and Central Asia, and (3) South Asia. Eligibility and financial provisions differ from FLAS fellowships, and additional application elements may be required. See the "Guidelines" tab above for specific fellowship information.
